BSNL has begun disconnecting broadband services for consumers in the Hills who have not been paying their bills as part of GJM’s campaign for Gorkhaland. Broadband services have been down in Darjeeling and Kalimpong since the last two days.

GJM, on its part, has said that it would take “strong action” if the government resorts to arm-twisting tactics to derail their ongoing movement. “We know that disconnecting broadband lines in the Hills is a tactic to derail our movement. The Indian and Chinese armies have reportedly been locked in sporadic exchanges of fire in Sikkim, where the two countries share a high-altitude border, since Tuesday night.

A senior defence ministry official in Kolkata, where the Eastern Command is based, said the conflict had been on at Nathu-la pass — 54 km east of Sikkim’s capital Gangtok.

The Indian Space Research Organisation lost contact with the Rs 380-crore spacecraft 10 months into its intended two-year mission that helped India gain experience in a deep space venture yet humbled Isro by its challenges.

Engineers at the Deep Space Network today analysed the last sets of telemetry data from the spacecraft in an attempt to understand better what might have happened, but sources indicated that the spacecraft mission was over.

The space agency said the Isro Deep Space Network station near Bangalore lost radio contact with Chandrayaan-1 abruptly at 1.30am on Saturday after receiving routine housekeeping telemetry signals from the spacecraft until 12.25am. [ Read More ]
